Messy Nightstands

Updated: Feb 22

You see it everywhere, a quick fix for anything and everything you can think of. Sex has taken a place in this category too. Quickies become the norm with couples whose lives are too busy for sex. Nightstands littered with chapstick, water bottles, books, chargers and medication. If you have kids, its another beast entirely. External distractions abound in a space that should be inviting. We crave clean, organized, uncluttered spaces. But we’re so tired from life that the task gets to be overwhelming and finds its way on our huge to-do list.

And this is where I come in. We are going to take a few key steps in resolving the cluttered and very unwelcoming bedroom.

First, you are going to sit down with your partner and discuss your dreams and goals. Ask yourself, what do you want in your space? What relaxes you? Are there smells, textures, lighting that you prefer? Take a minute to brainstorm with your partner to create an intimate space that you can enjoy as a couple. Determine how much time and money you want to invest into creating this space. Make sure you stick to this part, it’s very important.

Now that you have a Vision of your dream space, it’s time to make some piles. If you need help with this, there are dozens of shows and YouTubers that can help. But basically, you’re going to purge the things you don’t use and keep the things you do.

Next, you’re going to organize all your keeps. You may also need to do some deep cleaning. I don’t know about you, but I can’t relax in a space that’s not clean. Actually, a hotel sounds pretty nice. Unfortunately, hotels are not realistic.

After you have cleaned and organized and purged, you are going to reward yourselves. Rewards can be big or small, going out to dinner to celebrate your hard work sounds like a great idea!

In our next step, we want to get our creative juices flowing. You might want to visit a lighting store or a candle shop. Bed Bath and Beyond, Joanns, Michaels, Target, Home Goods and Walmart can all provide plenty of inspiration. It’s up to you and what you’re looking for. Don’t forget to stimulate your sensory system with different textures like pillows or a fluffy shag rug.

Now that you’ve completed your own custom room, its time to relax and enjoy!
